In this sample of over 400 children with ASD and over 250 children with ADHD, we found nearly identical scores for behaviors related to poor self-regulation. Not surprisingly, the effect sizes for the non-significant planned comparisons were very small, with minimal effects between the ASD and ADHD groups on both the Self-Regulation and Attention scales. The majority of the effect sizes for the significant effects were large (mean d = 1.01, ranging from 0.48 to 1.44 across the two forms). This finding indicates that problems with attention and self-regulation were just as severe in the ASD group as they were in the ADHD group. Importantly, the youth with ADHD were not rated higher than the youth with ASD on these scales. This is not unexpected given that the behaviors assessed on these scales are consistently reported in both populations. The ASD group scored significantly higher than the ADHD group on all scales, except for the Self-Regulation and Attention scales on both parent and teacher forms. Planned comparisons were made between ASD and ADHD groups. In addition to significance levels, an estimate of effect size (with Cohen’s d) is provided for every effect. 01 was used for all F-tests and all planned comparisons. In an attempt to control for Type I errors that might occur with multiple analyses, a more conservative criterion of p <. The independent variable (IV) of interest was group membership, and the demographic characteristics of the samples (e.g., age, gender, race/ethnicity, parental education level, and geographic region) were controlled for by including these variables as covariates. A series of analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs) and multivariate analyses for covariance (MANCOVAs) were conducted to investigate whether scores on the Autism Spectrum Rating Scales can distinguish between the groups when the demographic variables were controlled statistically. Next, I combine data from a number of our studies, allowing comparison of neuro-cognitive abilities for youth with ASD and ADHD. First, I review the results of studies involving children with ASD and ADHD that were part of the standardization sample for the Autism Spectrum Rating Scales (ASRS, 2009). In this article, I briefly summarize research findings from several sources. However, even with these improvements, an appreciation of the relationship between ASD and ADHD has yet to be fully appreciated and recognized by the American Psychiatric Association in the construction of diagnostic protocols. When criteria for both ADHD and ASD are met, the DSM 5 recommends that both diagnoses should be given. Interestingly, the DSM notes that approximately 70% of individuals with ASD may suffer from one co-morbid mental disorder and 40% may suffer from two or more co-morbid mental disorders. For the first time, however, both conditions can be simultaneously diagnosed. However, it is still the case, as noted, that problems with attention, impulse control and hyperactivity are not considered within diagnostic criteria for ASD. However, improvements were made with the recent publication of the Fifth Edition of the American Psychiatric Association Diagnostic Criteria. The omission of this consideration in DSM-5 appears as much an oversight as an intentional effort to not address this issue. ![]() ![]() Self-regulatory problems related to attention, hyperactivity and impulse control are characteristics of ASD and from this author’s view should be considered as part of the future diagnostic criteria for this condition. The combined group also appears to experience a much higher rate of functional impairment than those youth with ASD or ADHD alone. It has yet to be clearly demonstrated whether these data suggest a one or two way co-morbidity. The percentage of children with ADHD comorbid with Autism Spectrum Disorder is still not completely understood, but there is a significant overlap (Mayes, Calhoun, Mays & Molitoris, 2012). Thus, the majority (59%) of those with PDD – NOS or Autism met criteria for Comorbid ADHD. In 2004 we reported that 26% of children in our sample of what was then referred to as Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified, met the criteria for a diagnosis of ADHD – Combined Type, while 33% met the criteria for ADHD – Predominantly Inattentive Type (Goldstein & Schwebach, 2004). Traits of ASD and ADHD are strongly related in the general population as well as in clinical groups. Previous research by our group and others has, for example, found a significant overlap between these two conditions (Goldstein & Schwebach, 2004 Goldstein and Naglieri, 2009 van der Meer, Lappenschaar, Hartman, Greven, et. In the last twelve years, a number of peer reviewed studies have demonstrated the elevated incidence of ADHD symptoms within populations of children receiving DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5 diagnoses of Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder and Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified. ![]() Similarly, you cannot buy the Spectrum TV Choice package as a standalone streaming service if you are not an existing Spectrum Internet user. How do you calculate your Personal Year number? Instead, you would do whatever it takes to become a master creator of your soul’s destiny and not just a mere victim of your life’s circumstances. And you won’t blame anyone for your misfortunes anymore. In addition, when you raise your self-awareness and understand the energies of your Personal Year numbers, you will realize how nothing in this world is a coincidence. You will prepare yourself better, and you will find the best way to get to your goals successfully. Once you learn to recognize your past and present behavioral patterns and align yourself with the energetic vibrations of the Universe, you will make better decisions in the end. So, no matter what year you are in, always ask yourself: Am I repeating my past or am I building on my past experiences and moving on? Personal Years simply serve as a guide to help you identify any repetitive behavioral patterns that you may have so you can stop repeating them and navigate your life in a more conscious and constructive manner. Because numerology is all about human behavior. That’s why it is also important – apart from understanding the link between numbers and planets – that you are aware of your own behavior. And whatever number and/or planet rules your Personal Year could, in turn, influence your behavior and decision-making. Hence, the reason why you may feel differently and experience different things every single year is because every year you are under the influence of a different planet and numerical vibration. In other words, the year you are in carries a specific theme that is linked to the behavioral qualities and energies pertaining to the nine planets in astrology (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu). Simply because each calendar year, including your Personal Year, is ruled (or influenced) by a certain planet. If you truly want to know what’s in store for you, including all the possibilities and probabilities, it is of utmost importance that you learn about the planets in the Universe and their astrological meaning. Also, you will know when it’s time to sit back and relax and when it’s time to be productive again. And when you know what’s ahead, you can work with the energy (and make things happen for you) instead of fighting against it. Having said that, knowing your Personal Year number in advance can help you discover what the new year holds for you personally. But since energy is always flowing, you will always feel some residue of the old year’s energies once you transition into the new. Personal Years run from January to December, just like a regular calendar year (aka Universal Year). This includes both obstacles and challenges but also opportunities one can seize and manifest on the material plane. It entails the energies a person may feel and the events one may experience throughout the year. Each year within your nine-year cycle represents a Personal Year. When the cycle is completed, you get the chance to start all over again. In numerology, we go through life in cycles of nine years. No matter what you are going through and wherever you find yourself within your nine-year cycle, always remember one thing there is a time for everything in life, and everything in life has its time! And that is where the magic of understanding your Personal Years comes in. |
